Nothing to experiment, just read some old books.
To simplify I am using TCM terms but the practice was widely used in Europe before the medico mafia came up with time release via radiated particles. Young children have a low stomach Qi and this can easily be completely ruined by things like drugs, coffee, sugar etc.

To bypass these issues suppositories where almost always used to administer meds, it is still the MOST efficient way to get a drug past the stomach (acid).
