There's a yahoo kombucha group and a few kombucha groups on Facebook, too. Many folks will send you the scoby for free.

Then you just make some strong tea, add some sugar, slap in the scoby 'shroom' into the big jar and let it sit on a warm counter for a few days with a tight netting or paper towel covering to keep out the bugs.
