Malic Acid vs Apple Juice and prep duration

I am out on a limb here because I have never seen and trials or medical evidence that relates malic acid to liver function. The very first mention was in Dr Kelly's book and his statement has been reiterated from health website to health website. There are also other fruits that give greater concentrations of malic acid that apples. Consequently, I am not convinced about the value of malic acid as a preparation for a liver-flush although my mind is still open.

There is evidence that pectin found in apples changes cholesterol which can be measured by a blood test. Excess cholesterol is removed from the body through the excretion of bile in stools. This only occurs at a set rate. Bearing in mind that pectin is also found in other fruit a veg (EG carrot) if your diet is already pectin rich supplements are not going to make much difference.

People who eat plenty of fruit and veg consume about 5 grams of pectin a day. You need to eat 6 grams a day to affect blood cholesterol levels. If your diet isn't rich in fruit and veg you need to change it.

If you have a typical diet low in fruit and veg and you then start to eat 6 grams of pectin per day for a week it has the potential to reduce blood cholesterol by 12% and over 2 weeks 16%. This will also change the production and cycling of bile.

If you believe that malic acid is important then you require 3 grams per day for a week of l-malic acid (the natural form).
