umbilical hernia

My friend has been told he has developed an umbilical hernia, and will need that surgical procedure that entails cutting, stitching, and placing some mesh inside him as the muscle "will not grow back together where its torn."
I remember hearing of alternative methods to deal with this.
Please help! He doesn't want to slice and dice if he can avoid it!
