I would encourage you to gently but thoroughly clean the space between your teeth and your gums (commonly referred to as a pocket). I would encourage you to get, if possible, an electric brush. I use the Braun plaque remover. Don't forget to floss also.
www.sensibleproducts.com has an herbal mouthwash you can use. It does not taste too good, but it is helpful.
You can also use salt water rinses, until the bleeding subsides.

Having your gums professionally cleaned would be a big help. Do you live close to a dental school? They usually do very good work for a lot less money.
