Hey- I didn't read all the other responses, but I did take mine out myself.
I found the strings, which took some time, then pulled slowly and breathed deeply. It didn't hurt- but was uncomfortable.
I'm not really sure, but I think that's all they do anyway.
And I took mine out b/c I was seriously losing it.
Anyway, not sure if you should do it yourself, but I did.
