Tampon left in for 3 weeks
My daughter called this morning and told me she had discoverd a tampon that had been left in for 3 weeks! She said she had not been feeling well for the past couple of weeks, but nothing major. There was of course some odor upon removal. I've never known anyone who has experienced this, so just wondered what if anything she should do?

She needs to have removed ASAP as this can cause a deadly staphylococcus infection call toxic shock.
If she wants to, she can take three full caps of oregano oil three times a day. This helped me with a mild staph infection.

First let me say...thank you ladies for being brave enough to share your horror stories. I felt like a complete bafoon before I started reading. I thought I was alone in this! 40 years old, 4 daughters so 4 births and a ton of period cycles! I had been at the end of my cycle and not bleeding so my husband and I had, had sex. That made me spot a little more. So I went ahead and put a tampon in. Clearly I so brilliantly, brain lapsed that I had inserted the little demon spawn.
For several days (at least 5) I was noticing an odd smell. Lifting the blankets to smell them, smelling my husband, smelling the kids, sniffing the air like a blood hound on the case. All to no avail! What is that ghastly smell! It was getting really frustrating!
After a shower one night, it was planned that since the kids had blissfully found their way to that ever so sweet place of slumber, we would utilize our time to have some fun with each other. I am very particular about my ladypart smelling clean, so I reached down and touched it to be sure. When I smelled my hand I was horrified! How can this be? I JUST got out of the shower! I wanted to die. Needless to say, we ended up forfitting the pleasures that layed ahead for the typical cuddle and a movie. However, we had been intimate during the time the above mentioned demon spawn had taken up residency in my birth canal more than once. There was that feeling again, that death had to feel better than this realization... I guess he had noticed that I still smelled slightly of blood. He never complained of the foul, dead alien smell I was experiencing. (I think he just loves me so much he didn't want to destroy my heart) Though after I gave birth to my demon spawn this morning and told him about it, the truth did gently reveal itself from his lips. But still not in the way I'm describing it.
I had also been "leaking" what I thought was dark urine on my panties. I thought I was having bladder issues. When I wiped I saw old blood. But a week after my cycle?! Maybe its a getting older thing, I thought to myself. I never smelled the horrific smell in the bathroom though?!?! Go figure. Then, sleepily once I woke this morning, I stumbled into the bathroom for the morning empty the bladder that has had 5 children bounce off of it, (yes 5, 4 living) as quickly as possible. Much to my surprise I felt something fall out! WTH?!?!?!?!? I must just be sleepy still right? WRONG! When I stood up there it was! Staring me in the face! The DEMON SPAWN! So many questions now spinning in my head, yet so many answers too. What a relief. Thank God it was out and now I understood what in the bloody hell (pun intended) was happening!
Confused, horrified, feeling dirty and small, I of course ran to Google in high hopes of answers and a cure for my deeply bruised ego. Thank you ladies for being that cure! I wish you all the best!

I'm posting a link to info about TSS (toxic shock syndrome). To my knowledge this is the only potential problem. If she didn't get this then she will be fine without doing anything other than removing the tampon. The vagina will clean itself out though it's own processes, although a douche may speed up the process. I had something similar happen with a sponge years ago. It was very smelly, but most of the odor went with the sponge itself and it cleared up very fast once I got it out.

Please advise what happened with your daughter..the scent was very bad. yes. about three weeks..I thought I was pregnant, for I was menstrating very lightly, and it had been over 10 days...my husband DID ejaculate inside, and then the next morning..I must have placed a tampon in...now..it has been left until 3 weeks later, (last night) and I am horrified! what if I concieved behind all of this!!!

I'm SO glad someone else posted about this - I've been scared out of my mind - and trying to get an appt. with an OB/GYN - for a long while now. After doing searches here on my symptoms - a watery brown discharge that only appears when my body is "excited" or I'm sexually active - I found info on "lost" tampons. I REALLY didn't think it could be possible & even asked my ex-bf if he could "feel" a tampon/foreign body inside me and he said no. Just to be on the safe side I did some self-checking tonight & there WAS an absolutely disgusting tampon lodged way up there that turned out to be the source of the brown fluid. I will call Planned Parenthood tomorrow & see if they feel I need further care but I am so relieved (yet horrified!) - I was imagining all kinds of terrible scenarios. The awful part is that I have absolutely NO idea how long the tampon was stuck there - I've had other tampons in since and have had intercourse. How strange, as I am in exactly the same situation! I had a really foul smelling discharge for days, which was often brown coloured. I was really embarassed by the smell and getting a bit worried about it. I looked for a tampon, but didn't find one... until today!
When I took it out it absolutely stank- it had obviously started to rot. I searched to see if there were any health problems associated, but haven't found any. I was aware of TSS, but have felt well, so I don't consider that to be a possibility.
I'm just pleased I found it!

OMG the same thing happened to me!! About 5 days ago I had a tampon in and my husband and I had intercourse. I forgot all about the tampon. Then about 3 days ago I started having this brownish foul smelling discharge!! I thought I had cancer or something. It was so nasty! I just returned from the doctors office for this same problem. I did not know the tampon was in there. Not even sure how long it was in there!
I was having cramping, sweats, discharge with a brown tinge, and a horrible odor. The nurse practitioner prescribed doxycycline for infection. This is the second time that this has happened. The last time was two years ago. I keep track of my usage of tampons and do not know how this can happen again!

This will make all of you feel better! I was on a sailing trip in the South Pacific and the same thing happenned to me. Smell, brown discharge, I was scared because we were miles from civilization. Three days later we landed in the Kingdom of Tonga (not sure that is civilization!) and they had a hospital of sorts. My husband accompanied me and they found nothing but I really think it had finally fallen out after checking for it everyday. Talk about embarrassing! Tin roof hospital with concrete block walls and all the nurses giggling about this silly American women who lost her tampon. Now I am back home and my husband is still on the boat and the head (bathroom) is down. Bet when he takes it apart it is that damn tampon. Glad I am not there!

The gynecologist who consulted me and where my tests were taken due to the diagnosis of Cervical Dysplasia, i.e. the appearance of precancerous cells originating from an HPV not treated on time, prescribed me the use 2 courses of 3 boxes each course with CERVUGID Ovules and Isoprinosine .
The problem is that I have not found this treatment anywhere...

The cramps continued all that evening but were releived by taking Ibuprofen and went away the next day. My periods were crazy at first but it's getting pretty awesome....hardly have one anymore! I'm now getting mine removed, which makes me a little nervous...but also excited because I'm going to try to conceive. I'll let you know about removal when it happens.-

It is almost guaranteed that you will suffer more problems with the Mirena IUD than with the pill.

LOVE IT!! I had more problems with the pill than I have with the Mirena IUD!! With the pill...I would have cramps, headaches, mood swings, not feel in the mood sexually and most of all the fact of remembering to take the pill everyday. And I've tryed so many different kinds of pills too. Some would even make me vomit and have severe diarehea. With the IUD I got it inserted and now I don't have to worry about anything for five whole years. My husband's mother has been an RN in an OB/GYN's office for 30 years and she totally reccomends it also. I haven't had one single problem so far with my IUD and it's such a releif not worrying everyday to take the pill. It brings alot more spontenaity into our relationship because we don't have to be concerned about an unwanted pregnancy, and the best part is.....I hardly have a period anymore anyways. They get lighter and shorter as they go on and I hardly even have one at all anymore....and that's a releif in itself, and totally healthy!!!-

that should concern you. and the fact a lot of people stop getting their period and no one knows why this happens either. very scarey. a lot of IUD's are made out of copper....don't you think some of the copper is absorbed in your body? do you know how long it takes to detox metals form the body and how hard this is on your liver?
you couldn't pay me to put something in me that is unknown how it works, that stops your period for an unknown reason and it's has a lot of metal in it. even if there are copper free ones....what makes it mess up your body's normal functioning?
and the pill causes gallstones...i am still flushing those things out after being on the pill for 10 years.
i am not trying to be a bummer but think about it. your liver directly realted to your hormonal health...i wonder if the IUD adversely affects your liver? no one knows too much about it except it helps to prevent pregnancy. the main stream medical doctors and nurses will tell you what they are taught by the pharm companies and such...and it's all run for profit making. all of it. you have to do your own homework now a days. it's sad but true.

I know that is a weird question to ask but I have had my mirena for almost two years and after reading all the sumptoms that women have posted it has made me understand what I have been experiencing. I haven't seen many women post yeast infections as a side effect. I never suffered with yeast infections like I have since I've been using Progestin only hormones. Get a good probiotic to help you with the yeast infections. Mine actually became a systemic problem (candidiasis). A easy way to tell if you have candida is to get a clear glass of water, fill it up and spit into it. If strings form from your saliva, you probably have candida. Google it Good Luck-

You may have noticed that over the counter medications are not strong enough. Please don't let it become systemic which is very difficult to fight. Do the saliva test that will help you to figure out your next plan of action. Definitely go to the health food store and get a good Probiotic(Acidophilus) Google it. This will help increase the good bacteria in your system which will help battle the yeast. I've learned with the hormones, it becomes a vicious cycle. I started having yeast infections without itching. I would just curd up with the discharge. I've tried everything to get it under control. Finally, I had the IUD removed. I was having other issues too-Acne, severe weight gain, mood swings, etc...Its been out two weeks. Bomber, I wanted to keep because it helped with bleeding symptoms of my fibroids. Keep me posted. I'm still suffering with mild symptoms. I'm still moody and slightly depressed. I know my emotional issues are hormonal because there is nothing to be doom and gloom about. Still having some Acne issues. The Acne was unbearable with the Mirena...a new cystic pimple everyday. I'm 31 but have zits like I'm 15. I've only developed two pimples since removal vs pimples every other day.
I hoped that I would get instant relief after removal. It's going to take some time for our body to sort itself out.
I had a period with some clotting after removal that lasted about a week. I'm still spotting though.
As for the yeast, I got an infection shortly after removal. I'm still having some discharge with a metallic smell. Though it's not as bad as when I had the Mirena...my vagina stayed a mucosal pit.
Pink, have you noticed a metallic smelling discharge????? That has been the most bizarre. I have never had this problem ever.
I wouldn't even know I was curding sometimes until I had sex. I know this is TMI, but my boyfriend would ask what is the cottage cheese discharge. Talk about embarrassing and trying to explain that it's not harmful to him OR a STD. None of the doctors (naturopath and MD) understand or have been able to provide long term relief. No one has tried to figure out why this is happening. I've been given herbs and diflucan and have used plenty Monistat. I'm still battling to reclaim a healthy vagina.
Try Rephresh. It seems to help. It restores a balanced ph to the vagina making it harder for yeast and other infections to thrive.
I'm trying a new Probiotic by a company called Source of Life and the name of the product is Primal Defense and will use the Rephresh every three days. I'll keep you posted. Let me know how you're doing. I thought I was the only one suffering with this type of issue. We're going to get well.-

Its not that I just fly off the handle, but everything that my husband does just gets under my skin :) Anyway, I have a period (the first time in a year) and I DO have that metallic(b/c it doesn't smell like cheese or normal vagina smell...huh?) smell. I can't stand it. I am going to a herb place, that we have in town, that does muscle testing, so she will know what kind of herbs my body will need to heal and rebalance. I know my body is super sensitive to anything that I ingest or put on it. maybe the yeast infections is just my body trying to tell me that the harmones in the IUD aren't good for me.
Ha, Oh no. Its SOOOO embarasing when the 'significant other' finds out. Ahhh *exhale*, its not like you can hid it. I just got married 5 months ago and my husband told me after the honeymoon (thank goodness) that I have an odor. I about died!

I have been miserable-not even realizing it was because of Mirena-you know cause all of docs say it ONLY has a local effect, yeah right.
I've battled with the vaginal odor thing too-bacterial vaginosis-fish smell. Had a standing prescription for Metro Gel to help with that.
Update-The Rephresh has helped somewhat. Though I had a short period where I curded out of control after insertion, it was like yeast die off effect. If I don't get better. I'm going to have to go to my primary care and demand something stronger. I believe the yeast gets immune to routine anti-fungals. I've heard Nystatin is suppose to be very good for killing yeast. I'm going to research it some more.
I'm so frustrated. I can't hardly remember my life before the recurring yeast infections, disfiguring acne, obscene weight gain, migraines, curding vagina and bouts with depression. LOL-I summed that up!
I can't figure out the metallic smell though. I've searched high and low with no success. My Naturopath thinks that it was something metallic in the Mirena. I don't know-why am I still smelling it though it's not as strong when I had the Mirena. I've had it out for 17 days.
Soooo Did you do the saliva test? I haven't did it recently cause I know i'll have strings. It'll just piss me off. Do you have any children? Are you still smelling the metallic smell since removal. When was your last yeast infections. Did you experience any heart palpitations after removal? What does your doc say about the recurring vaginal infections?

I don't have any children and I am 24. This is what you need to do. get a Bifidophilous(its stronger than acidophilous) and also get a oregon grape extract. Get these things from a good provider, I would suggest Nature Sunshine. YOu can go online and find them if you don't have them locally. THe last time I responded to you I went and bought these two things and have been taking them religiously. I am almost smell free. Yes I did the saliva test...and yes it was stringy. My last yeast infection is right now. I have had the Mirena for two years and I had no clue what was causing my problems until I found this website. I have not had palpitations, thank goodness but I had them soooo bad. I asked my doc and she said that I needed to watch what I was eating. YEAH RIGHT. DOn't ask them, they don't know. Get those two things I told you to from a good distributor and you will notice a difference. Keep me posted!

The Iodine doctors have raised their dosage recommendation for cancer patients this past year. Now 50 mg is the absolute minimum. Dr. Derry was a pioneer. I would love to see any follow-up records he had. He claims his Iodine patients never had a recurrence.

Case study: I got a severe case of aspergillus fungus mold infection in my lungs which over a few months, I believe led to uterine cancer and asthma.
I could hardly breathe and the asthma inhaler said "causes fungal growth in mouth" so I threw it away.
I started on 300 mg (not mcg) of iodoral Iodine per day (in one dose first thing in the morning) and it took 1 month for that asthma to clear up. At that point I had a pre-scheduled hysterectomy for the uterine cancer (came out to stage 1A).
After 3 months my sinuses and lungs cleared up completely, and I reduced my dosage to 200 mg per day. I had regular thyroid and other blood tests to make sure that nothing was going wrong.
3 years later I have had a full body PET/MRI and I am completely free of mold and cancer. After that I dropped my dosage to 150 mg once or twice a week.
The reason I take a lot at one time is because it seems to me that the blood level of Iodine needs to reach a certain level to kill mold or viral etc infections. My husband had cleared bromine from his lungs and after some time of high doses (1000 mg SSKI (764 mg iodide)), dropped his maintenance dose too low to 30 mg SSKI (23 mg iodide). This left him scrambling eventually when he worked in two buildings with new furnishings (fire retardants), and his lungs rebelled fiercely. It took 1400 mg SSKI (1070 mg iodide) for several months for him to stop coughing up bromine. His maintenance dose this time will likely be no less than 600 mg iodide, after he stops working in those buildings. -

I began taking Iodoral (12.5mg) daily many years ago. It seemed to get rid of most of the cysts in my breasts. Then I read the book 'The Iodine Crisis' and, having a couple of cysts that are persistant, I upped my dose and finally was up to 50mg/day. Then one of the cysts began to get much bigger and very painful. And I developed a couple of cysts in the other breast as well. I wasn't doing the salt flushes along with the Iodine increase. But has anyone ever reported having this issue and what's the solution? I know Iodine helps, but how do I find the right dose? I've had BV for three months now. I am sick and tired of reading about this infection and only getting it as far as keeping it at bay. I am getting pretty desperate and I am looking for a final solution to this thing.
what have I taken: I was prescribed Metronidazole...it didn't do anything at all. I was then prescribed Clindamycin Phosphate, a localized Anibiotic, that also didn't work. Naturally, I quit the medicinal crap and started looking into homeopathic and herbal remedies. The home remedies have been the most successful.
I have:
douched with hydrogen peroxide to keep the discharge at bay.
I have douched with vinegar and baking soda to help lower my ph. (separate from the hydrogen peroxide,of course)
I have used tea tree oil on a tampon and without, as a means to kill the discharge and smell. It has worked greatly but it doesn't allow for my body to naturally fight it off by itself.
I have taken herbal supplements in attempts to "regrow" my original vaginal flora.
I have taken:
regular L.Acidophilus found in yogurt and in tablets. I have taken both. Nothing.
I have taken Jarrow's Fem dophilus, which contains L.rhamnosus and L. reuteri. nothing.
I have taken, Nature's Way Primadophilus, which contains L. Acidophilus, L.rhamnosus, and L.reuteri. nothing
I have used Bio Fem Active gel, which I purchased from the UK to help lower my pH, not only has this not worked but it has allowed for a nice warm damp place for the BV to regrow!
I am now taking Swanson's Fem Flora which contains, L.reuteri, L.rhamnosus, L.acidophilus, L.casei, L.fermentum, Lactococcus, and L.plantarum.
By the way, the stuff listed above are probiotics. I suspect that the Antibiotics that I took at first from the dotcor simply worsened my body's chance at repopulating the "good" bacteria.
I am FURIOUS. I WANT AN ANSWER TO GET RID OF THIS AWFUL THING. NO WOMAN SHOULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS. IF YOU HAVE AN ANSWER, A SOLUTION, PLEASE TELL ME BECAUSE I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE!
AND I SWEAR TO EVERYTHING ON THE FACE OF THIS PLANET, DO NOT TELL ME I SHOULDN'T BE DOUCHING, THIS WILL ONLY LEAD ME TO SUSPECT THAT YOU HAVE NEVER EVER HAD BV SO BE QUIET!-

Two years ago I was having constant BV issues. No sooner would it clear up, then it would come back again especially in the warmer summer months. I was exercising regularly at the time, I had a steady boyfriend and at first I thought he may have been the cause but then I realized he wasn't to blame. My doctor kept implying that I wasn't keeping myself clean enough which was very frustrating because I knew darn well that wasn't the case. One day I finally decided to stop using tampons. You're very fortunate. Unfortunately for me, I don't use tampons. All the reasons that doctors say MIGHT cause BV are merely speculation. The only thing that they do know is that having multiple partners is somehow linked to BV, that's it. So all this crap about wiping from front to back, no tight under wear, deodorized soaps, tampons...blah blah blah, etc. While they may contribute to BV, that does not mean that that's why you have it. Because all the things I've listed above, I have either done (the good stuff) or have not done (the bad stuff). I mean, I'm not a m*o*o*n, doing harmful things to my body and it really pisses me off when doctors assume the reason I have BV is because I: have many sexua| partners (I have been in a monogamous relationship for 1 yr. Same partner.) I have always kept my vagina clean with regular soap, no douching with perfumes, no tight underwear, no thongs, no tampon usage (aside from the tea tree oil stuff when I got BV), no smoking, no nylon underwear etc. And I still got BV.....
But thank you for sharing your way to a cure. Maybe someone else will read your post and find that not using tampons will work for them. =)-

I had bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections for as long as I remember. I tried everything you mentioned in your post to no avail. I even tried boric acid which is a great temporary relief. A few months ago I decided to stop eating eggs and processed foods in the morning. I would eat one/two eggs per day (runny) and I would accompany that with turkey bacon and sometimes bread...I did this breakfast everyday for a long time! For some reason I decided to stop eating the eggs and the bacon and replaced it with chobani yogurts in the morning, That is the only thing I changed in my diet. I am not a vegetarian, I like to eat everything. I have been clear for about two months now. No smell, no discharge, pretty normal, when before it'd be normal for a week and repeat itself.
Everybody is different, this is my experience and my assumption, the eggs were the culprit in my story, at least I think. I am not even sure if that is the reason why they stopped. Whatever the reason, I am happy now and glad that this nightmare is over. Good luck to all the ladies still going through this. I definitely feel your pain!-

It sounds like we're going through the exact same thing!!! I've had it for about 4 months now and at first was putting a lot of trust into my doctor and the gels he would prescribe. They work for about 2 or 3 weeks then it comes back. I've been taking Fem Dophilus and thought at first it was helping but.... it's pretty obvious now that it isn't. I've been thinking about doing the hydrogen peroxide thing but read from different people that it causes yeast infections... I'm scared to douche because of that as well. Drinking lime juice diluted with water and a plain dan active yogurt daily was also something I read and may try. My relationship is going south very quickly and I'm more and more depressed. I know I"m going to lose him if this doesn't get figured out... we'v e only been together 6 months!!! 4 of which we've been dealing with this. If you have found something that is working for you, please let me know.

Even if air is blow in to the vagina it can result in an air embolus. I have heard of cases of this happening with vaginal ozone insufflation as well. Some people claim that ozone cannot cause an embolus because of the lack of nitrogen. I disagree. If you can form bubbles in a glass of water you can form bubbles in the bloodstream. There is also a good reason why IV and IA ozone injections are given at such as slow rate. Again you do not want to cause an embolus.

Blow pure oxygen into a cup of blood and you might get a different reaction. Now we're talking about a occurance on the molecular level that's unseen by the naked eye. I bought an Ozone Generator from Saul Pressman and it was one of the best things I've ever done! I had an ovarian mass (one ovary was twice the size of the other) and tons of fertility issues (numerous lost babies). I'm a doctor myself....I treated myself with vaginal insuffication and completely eliminated the mass when I went back for repeat ultrasound in 6 weeks!!! In fact, I thought I was about to start menopause and she said my vaginal lining looked better too and I was ready to carry!
I bought my son a puppy for his birthday and she developed Parvo (which is basically a virus that eats the dogs intestines and they stop eating and drinking). Even with traditional vet care (treating only the symptoms of dehydration, starvation, and hypoglemia) dogs still have a 92% mortality rate. It can be so expensive to treat and most die anyway. I treated her with rectal insuffication, but still aggressively treated her symptoms with fluids from the vet. The ozone killed the virus and the fluids sustained her life until it was gone. She is so healthy now!
If you opt to go to a clinic you will spend a whole lot of money. I probably couldn't afford all the treatment I've done on myself as much as I use the ozone. There are so many uses! Embolism is only caused by the nitrogen. The blood readily intergrates the oxygen and ozone into it's system. That's what blood does. It carries oxygen. I'm a man, but the reports I hear from all over about Vaginal insufflation as it relates to Candida, Yeast infections. Cervical Cancer, Herpes is astounding. Just make sure that the ozone is properly humidified. Supplement with H202 therapy. as well.;
